Why use television in the classroom? What should be shown? How should I select appropriate programmes or clips to show to the class? Ask the following questions: Is the television programme? aligned with the set Outcomes for the lesson? free from discrimination? informative, yet interesting? on the same developmental level as the learners? How to use television in the classroom? As with any resource used in the classroom, television programmes or clips must be facilitated by the teacher. What is meant by facilitate? This means that the programme is not merely played to the learners but rather that the teacher and learners interact with the programme in order to make it a useful teaching and learning tool. Pre-viewing activities Prepare the Video and Television equipment. Explain unknown terminology (vocabulary) or concepts to the learners. Inform the learners what is expected of them whilst watching the video, e.g. they are to make notes, they are to look out for certain facts / pictures, etc.
